Other ZIP operations

What ZIP is for

Two jobs that look the same and are not: bundling several files into one so they travel together, and compressing them so they take less space. Documents and text compress by half or better; photographs, video and music are already compressed and gain almost nothing: a ZIP of JPEGs is a ZIP of JPEGs. When the point is bundling rather than shrinking, storing without compression is faster and just as useful.

Why ZIP and not something newer

Because it is the only archive format that opens with a double click on every operating system without installing anything. Newer formats compress better, but a recipient who cannot open the file has received nothing. The same logic applies to encryption: ZIP's built-in password protection is widely supported and weak by modern standards, so it keeps a file away from a colleague, not from an adversary.

Practical limits

Email providers usually cap attachments at 20 to 25 MB, and many scan inside archives and reject executables. Very large archives with tens of thousands of entries strain the browser's memory, which is why the tools here work in a streaming fashion and say plainly when a set is too large rather than failing halfway through.

Unzip on a phone without an app

A ZIP that arrives on a phone by mail or messenger is often a dead end: the Files app on an iPhone opens an ordinary archive but stops at a password, and on Android it depends on which file manager the phone came with. Extract ZIP runs in the browser on both, with nothing to install. Type the password if the archive has one, and list the paths of the files you need if you only want some of them: a single file comes back as itself, ready to open or share, and several come back as one plain ZIP without a password, which the phone's own file manager opens. Archives up to 300 MB are accepted. Going the other way, Create ZIP bundles up to two thousand files into one archive to send.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a ZIP file on an iPhone or Android?

Open Extract ZIP in Safari or Chrome and choose the archive. A single file comes back as itself; several come back as one plain ZIP that the phone's file manager opens. Nothing is installed, the archive never leaves the phone, and a password-protected ZIP works the same way once you type the password.

Why can't I open a password-protected ZIP?

The built-in viewers on phones and some desktops do not support encrypted entries. Extract ZIP does, as long as you have the password; a forgotten one cannot be recovered here.

What is the maximum size for an email ZIP?

Whatever the mail provider allows, usually 20 to 25 MB after encoding, which means a file of about 18 MB. Larger archives go as a link from a cloud drive, or split: zipping photos and videos barely shrinks them, so a ZIP of pictures is roughly their total size.
