What a PDF actually is

A PDF is a description of pages: where the text sits, which fonts it uses, what vectors and images go around it. That is why it prints identically from any machine, and it is also why editing one is awkward: there are no paragraphs to reflow, only glyphs placed at coordinates. Understanding that explains most of what the tools here do: splitting and merging move whole pages, editing works on top of them, and converting to a document format has to reconstruct a structure the file never really had.

The two kinds of PDF

Some PDFs contain real text; others contain a photograph of text. A scan from a copier is the second kind, and no amount of searching, copying or translating will work on it until recognition has been run over it to add a text layer. You can tell them apart in a second: if your cursor selects a sentence, there is text; if it draws a box, there is not. Half the frustration people have with PDF tools comes from this distinction being invisible until something fails.

Size, and why PDFs get so big

Almost always because of the images inside them: a report with a hundred photographs at print resolution is enormous, however plain it looks. Compression works by resampling those images down to what the page needs, which is why the same tool can take fifty megabytes to five without anything looking different on screen. Text-only PDFs are already tiny and cannot usefully be compressed further. If a text document is huge, something else is embedded in it.

The PDF jobs people search for most

Four tasks cover most of what people need. Merging puts several files into one, in the order you choose, without touching the pages themselves. Compressing shrinks the images inside a scan or a slide deck, which is where the megabytes are. Converting to Word rebuilds paragraphs from the positions of the letters, which works well on text documents and needs a second look on complex tables. And OCR adds a searchable text layer to a scanned PDF, on the server, because recognition is too heavy for a phone. Each has a page here, and the result of one can be handed to the next: merge first, compress once, then protect with a password before it goes out.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I select text in my PDF?

Because the page is a picture: a scan or a photograph of a document, with no text layer underneath. Run it through OCR PDF and the words become selectable and searchable while the page keeps looking exactly the same.

Does compressing a PDF lose quality?

Only in the images. Text, fonts and vector drawings are copied across untouched, so a contract stays sharp at any level; a scanned page is one big image and softens at the stronger levels. The lightest level keeps 300 dpi for anything that will be printed.

How do I edit a PDF without Word?

For small changes, Edit PDF writes text and shapes on top of the existing page in the browser. For rewriting paragraphs, convert to Word, edit there and convert back: a PDF stores letters at coordinates, not paragraphs, so real editing needs the round trip.
