How to Flatten PDF

  1. 1

    Add your PDF

Drop in one file or up to twenty. The document is opened by your own browser, so nothing travels to a server on the way.

  2. 2

    Choose what to flatten

Flatten form fields, annotations, or both at once. Tick the confirmation box first: flattening cannot be undone afterwards.

  3. 3

    Download the flattened PDF

Save the result. Filled values stay visible on the page, but they can no longer be edited, cleared or overwritten.

What flattening changes

A form field is a separate object floating above the page: it stores a value that your reader draws for you. Flattening paints the field's own appearance into the page content stream and then deletes the field itself. The words you typed stay where they were, at the same size and in the same font, but they are page content now: there is no box left to click into, no value to clear, and no reader setting that could draw them differently. Stamps, highlights, notes and signature images are handled the same way.

Which parts you can flatten

Pick forms to fix filled fields while comments and markup stay editable, which suits a contract already signed but still under review. Pick annotations to burn in stamps and notes while the fields themselves remain fillable, which suits a template still being passed around. Pick both, the default, when the document goes out for good. Hyperlinks are deliberately left alone in every mode: a link has no appearance of its own, so flattening it could only mean deleting it, and a page that has quietly stopped linking anywhere is a surprise nobody asked for.

Your file stays on your device

The PDF is read, flattened and rewritten inside this browser tab. It is never uploaded, never queued on a server, and no copy is left behind for anyone to delete later. Close the tab and the document is gone from memory. Signed contracts, filled medical forms and internal reports never leave the machine they are stored on.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to flatten a PDF?

Flattening prints the interactive parts of a document into the page itself. Form fields, stamps and markup become ordinary page content: they look identical, but they can no longer be selected, edited or cleared, and every reader draws them the same way.

Can I undo flattening?

No. Once a field is drawn into the page and removed, its value is graphics rather than data, and there is nothing left to turn back into a field. Keep the original file if you might need to edit it again; that is what the confirmation box is warning you about.

Do hyperlinks still work after flattening?

Yes. Link annotations survive in every mode. A link has no appearance to print into the page, so flattening one could only mean deleting it, and you would lose working references for nothing in return. Clickable links behave as they did before.

Why did my fields come out blank?

Because the file stored your answers as data without drawing them yet, which is what many form fillers do. This tool rebuilds each field's appearance before flattening, so the values are painted first. If a field was empty, only its outline gets printed.

How is flattening different from a password?

Flattening changes the document; a password changes who may open it. A flattened file still opens for anyone, but its filled values are fixed. Password protection leaves every field editable for whoever has the password. The two are often used one after the other.

Why can XFA forms not be flattened here?

XFA forms are built from an XML template that browsers cannot draw, so there is no appearance to print into the page. Files like these come from older government and banking systems, and Adobe Acrobat can still open and flatten them for you.

Should I flatten a PDF before printing it?

Usually yes, if the document has filled fields. Some printer drivers and older readers skip field content altogether or draw it at a different size. Flattening removes that uncertainty: what you see on screen is what comes out of the printer.

Does flattening count as an electronic signature?

No. Flattening only stops fields from being edited; it says nothing about who filled them in or when. A digital signature adds a verifiable certificate and detects later changes. Flatten to fix the layout, sign to prove authorship.
