How to convert PDF to Word

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Up to 300 MB, up to 500 pages. Whether the file already has selectable text is detected automatically.

  2. 2

Choose the output format and layout mode

DOCX, DOC, ODT or RTF; flowing text you can freely edit, or an exact-layout copy that keeps positioning closer to the original at the cost of easy editing.

  3. 3

    Download the editable file

A scanned PDF with no text layer runs through OCR automatically first, so the result is editable text, not an unselectable image pasted into a document.

Flowing text versus exact layout

Flowing mode reconstructs the document as paragraphs that reflow naturally when edited, which is the right choice for a document you plan to rewrite. Exact layout instead places each block of text at its original position on the page, closer to a visual copy of the PDF, which is more faithful to complex layouts but harder to edit as ordinary flowing text afterwards. Pick based on what you are about to do with the file, not on which sounds more accurate.

What happens with a scanned PDF

A scanned PDF is a picture of a page, and there is no text to extract from it. With OCR set to "auto" (the default), this is detected automatically and Tesseract recognises the text before the Word document is built, so the result is editable, selectable text rather than an image. Set it to "always" to re-run recognition even on a PDF that already has text, which helps when the existing text layer is known to be wrong.

Why tables sometimes need a check afterward

PDF has no native concept of a table; what looks like one is text positioned in a grid. Reconstructing that as an editable table is a best-effort process, and a complex or irregular layout may need a manual adjustment in Word afterwards, particularly in exact-layout mode, where positioning is preserved more literally than structure.

Processed on our server, deleted automatically

PDF text extraction, OCR and document assembly all happen on PulsarKit's server. The uploaded file is deleted as soon as the job finishes. The result stays downloadable for one hour and is wiped from the server within about two hours, whether or not you download it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a scanned PDF with no text convert properly?

Yes. With OCR set to "auto" (the default), a PDF with no text layer runs through Tesseract automatically before the Word document is built, so you get editable text, not an unselectable image.

Should I choose flowing text or exact layout?

Flowing text for a document you intend to rewrite, since paragraphs reflow naturally when edited. Exact layout for a more visually faithful copy of complex formatting, at the cost of being harder to edit as ordinary text afterwards.

Do tables convert correctly?

Simple tables generally do. PDF has no built-in table structure, so reconstruction is best-effort, and an unusually complex or irregular table layout may need a manual fix in Word.

Can I get an ODT or RTF file instead of DOCX?

Yes. DOCX, DOC, ODT and RTF are all available as the output format.

Can I convert just some pages?

Yes. Enter a page range to convert only those pages instead of the whole PDF.

Which OCR languages are supported?

Sixteen languages including English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Armenian.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

No. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF. A protected file is detected and reported rather than failing silently.
