PDF to Word on a Mac Without Acrobat: Three Ways and What Each Keeps
On a Mac, Preview copies text and Pages cannot open a PDF, so the built-in route ends in copy and paste. Here is what each route keeps, from Word's own conversion to an online tool that rebuilds the file as DOCX on our server.

Three routes, no Acrobat
You have a PDF on your Mac and need it as an editable Word file. Three routes work without Adobe Acrobat: Apple's Preview and Pages, Microsoft Word, and a web converter.
They differ in what reaches the Word file. The first carries the text you select. The second converts a copy of the whole PDF. The third rebuilds the document as DOCX on our server, with OCR for scans.
Facts about the Apple and Microsoft apps come from their support pages, read on October 20, 2026.
Way 1: Preview, then Pages
Preview exports with File > Export and a Format menu. Apple's page on converting image files lists HEIC, JPEG, JPEG-2000, OpenEXR, PDF, PNG and TIFF. Holding Option adds specialized or older formats. None of the Preview pages we read mentions Word.
What Preview does offer is text. Choose Tools > Text Selection, drag over the text, then choose Edit > Copy. Holding Option selects a vertical block, which Apple suggests for a table column. Tools > Rectangular Selection copies part of a page as an image.
Pages can turn that text into a Word file, but it cannot take the PDF. Apple's guide says: "You can't open PDFs in Pages." It does open .doc and .docx files, and File > Export To > Word saves a Word copy.
So the built-in route is copy in Preview, paste into Pages, export to Word. It keeps the text you selected; table columns and images make separate trips. If text will not select, Apple names two causes: the Text Selection tool is off, or the PDF needs a password.
Way 2: Word, if it is installed
Microsoft describes this route on its support page "Edit a PDF". In Word, go to File > Open and pick the PDF. Word tells you it will make a copy and convert it into a format Word can display. The original PDF is not changed.
That page lists Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016 through 2024 under Applies To. It names no Mac edition, so try it on your copy: if File > Open accepts the PDF, the notes below apply.
Microsoft is direct about the limits. The conversion suits PDFs that are mostly text. Book chapters, or pages that look like a manuscript from a copier, won't be formatted well. Lines and pages may also break in different places.
A second page, "Opening PDFs in Word", adds a warning. When a PDF is mostly charts or other graphics, a whole page may arrive as one image. Its text then can't be edited. Endnotes, tables with cell spacing, page borders and PDF comments are among the elements it says don't convert well.
Way 3: PDF to Word in the browser
PDF to Word is one of more than 200 free file tools on PulsarKit. Open it in Safari or Chrome: nothing to install, no sign-up, no subscription.
It runs on our server, and its page says so before you add a file. The PDF is uploaded when you press Convert to Word. The upload is deleted when the job finishes, and the result is wiped within about two hours.
It takes one PDF of up to 300 MB and 500 pages. The output is DOCX by default, with DOC, ODT and RTF in the same menu. Flowing text suits rewriting; exact positions keep a closer visual match. A page range converts part of the file, and complex tables may need a fix in Word.
On October 20, 2026, a 20-page text PDF of 145 kB took about six seconds in Chrome on a Mac and came back as a 50 kB DOCX. That time runs from pressing Convert to Word to a ready file. In Safari, press Download, then click the Show Downloads button near the top right and the magnifying glass to find the file. Without Word, Pages opens .docx files, Apple's guide says.
Scans: where the routes split
A scan is a picture of a page, with no text layer behind it. Apple documents Live Text in Preview for text in a photo or image, through Copy Text in the Control-click menu. That page does not mention scanned PDFs, and Live Text isn't available in all regions or languages.
PDF to Word checks for a text layer first. With the default setting, a file without one goes through OCR before the Word file is built. The result is editable text, not a picture. The OCR language menu lists sixteen languages.
We ran one scanned page through it on October 20, 2026: a 664 kB scan of an English page with no text layer came back as an editable DOCX in about 28 seconds, and the recognized text had 305 words against 303 on the source page, with the paragraphs and the small table in place.
To keep a scan as a PDF with selectable text, OCR PDF adds a text layer to the scan itself. Preview's copy and paste then has text to work with.
Which route fits
For a paragraph or two, copy and paste from Preview does the job. If Word is installed and the PDF is mostly text, try Microsoft's conversion. For a scan, or a Mac without Word, PDF to Word rebuilds the file and runs OCR where needed.
Need only the words, with the file staying on your Mac? PDF to Text works inside the browser tab, and nothing is uploaded. It reads the text layer, so a scan needs OCR first.
PDF to Word reports a password-protected PDF instead of converting it. Remove a password you know with Unlock PDF, which also runs in your browser. Cut a file over 500 pages into parts with Split PDF. What happens to layout and tables after conversion is covered in PDF to Word and Back: What Actually Survives the Round Trip.
