A Smallpdf Alternative Without a Subscription: What Matches and What Is Missing

On October 19, 2026, we went through the 47 tools on Smallpdf's tools page. PulsarKit had a counterpart for 39 of them, with no account, no daily cap on browser tools and no subscription.

The job behind the search

You open Smallpdf to merge two files or shrink a scan, and the page tells you that today's free tasks are used up. On October 19, 2026, its support page said that free use is limited to two conversions a day, and its pricing page listed the file size for the free plan as limited, without a number. The next step it offers is a paid subscription, and even its free first week asks for a card.

PulsarKit is made for the same jobs without that step: more than 200 free tools for files in the browser, covering PDF, images, video, audio, text and conversion. There is no sign-up, no subscription and no payment form, and results carry no watermark.

Most tools run on your device. The ones that need a server say so on their page, with their limits next to the drop zone. The site works in ten languages.

39 of 47 Smallpdf tools, checked on October 19, 2026

On October 19, 2026, we listed every card on Smallpdf's tools page: 48 cards, one of which, PDF Scanner, is a page for a phone app rather than an online tool, which leaves 47. For each one we looked for a PulsarKit tool that does the same job. Here, counterpart means a tool for the same task, not identical features or limits. Both sites change, so read this as a count on one date.

39 of the 47 have a counterpart. The core of the list is the same: Merge PDF, Split PDF, Compress PDF, rotate, crop, organize, delete and extract pages, page numbers, watermark, redact, flatten, protect and unlock. Conversions match too: PDF to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and images, plus TXT, RTF, HTML, EPUB, Pages, OpenDocument and PDF/A.

A few counterparts are wider or narrower than the Smallpdf card. Smallpdf's watermark tool supports text only; Watermark PDF takes text or a logo. Smallpdf's JPG to PDF card accepts JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF and TIFF; on PulsarKit, PNG, GIF and TIFF have their own tools. One PulsarKit tool, OpenDocument to PDF, covers three Smallpdf cards: ODT, ODS and ODP.

Of the 39 counterparts, 23 work in your browser and 16 run on our server. PDF to Word is one of the server tools: a scanned PDF without a text layer goes through OCR automatically, at no charge. On Smallpdf's pricing page, OCR inside PDF to Word was marked as part of the paid plan on the same date.

What is missing

Eight Smallpdf cards had no counterpart at that check. Five are AI tools: AI PDF Assistant, Chat with PDF, AI PDF Summarizer, Translate PDF and AI Question Generator. PulsarKit does not offer AI summaries, chat or translation of a PDF.

Two are format cards. HWP to PDF converts Hangul word processor files, which no PulsarKit tool accepts. ZIP to PDF turns every supported file in an archive into PDFs in one step; on PulsarKit you extract the archive first, then convert the files one by one.

The last one is Smallpdf's universal PDF Converter, which takes a file and picks the direction for you. PulsarKit has separate converters for each pair of formats. The Convert File button on the home page comes close: you drop a file and choose what to do with it, but it is a starting point, not a single tool.

Limits, side by side

On Smallpdf's free plan, as its pages read on October 19, 2026: up to two conversions a day for visitors and free accounts, a daily download limit on most tools, a limited file size without a stated number, and no strong compression, batch processing or text editing. Those come with the paid monthly subscription.

On PulsarKit there is no account and no plan. Browser tools have no cap on how many files you process. Each tool states its own technical limit on its page, such as the largest file it accepts, because a browser tool works in your device's memory. Compress PDF offers three levels and a target size at no charge.

Server tools have limits of their own kind, and the page names them before you add a file: up to 300 MB per file, up to 30 jobs an hour, the file is deleted after processing and the result is wiped within about two hours. That is the whole list; there is no second tier behind it.

What happens to your file

Most PulsarKit tools do the work inside your browser tab. The processing code is downloaded to your device, and the file does not leave it. If you want to see this for yourself, open the Network panel of your browser while a tool runs: a browser tool produces only downloads of scripts and fonts, never a request that carries your file.

A result does not need a trip through your downloads folder. Under it, a list of next tools passes the file straight on, and when both tools run in the browser, that handoff stays on your device too.

There is no account, so there is no file history or cloud folder. A result waits in the tab for up to an hour, so download it before you close the tab.

Where to start

For the everyday jobs, start with Merge PDF, Split PDF and Compress PDF: all three run on your device and show the file size before and after.

To edit the text of a PDF, PDF to Word rebuilds the file as DOCX on our server and runs OCR for scans first. To put a signature on a contract, Sign PDF draws, types or uploads a signature in the browser. If you need a chat with a PDF, a summary or a Hangul file converted, Smallpdf still has those and PulsarKit does not.
