How to Clean PDF
- 1
Drop your PDF
Add one file or a whole folder of them, up to fifty at a time. Your browser opens each one locally.
- 2
Review the fields we found
See what the document is carrying: author, title, subject, keywords, the application that made it and the dates. Clear everything, or keep the fields you still want.
- 3
Download the cleaned file
Save the result, or the ZIP archive if you cleaned several. Pages, text and images come back untouched.
A PDF remembers more than you wrote in it
Every PDF carries an information dictionary with the author, the title, the subject, the keywords and two timestamps, plus the name and version of the program that produced it. Alongside it sits an XMP packet, an XML block that often repeats the same details and adds camera models, editing history, copyright statements and the account name of whoever exported the file. A document identifier ties revisions of the same file together across everyone who has handled it. None of that is visible on the page, and all of it travels with the attachment.
Cleaned in three places, not one
Clearing the information dictionary is the easy part. This tool also deletes the XMP packet from the catalog and from every page and image object that carries its own copy, because that is where a leftover author name usually hides. The document identifier is replaced with fresh random bytes rather than emptied, since an empty one breaks the file structure. Timestamps are set to 1 January 1970, which stays valid and tells a reader nothing.
Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can leak
This is the tool where that promise matters most. A file you are cleaning before publication is the one file you would not want sitting in a stranger's upload queue. Your PDF is opened, stripped and rewritten inside this browser tab using WebAssembly. There is no server copy, no processing queue, no retention window and no log entry with your filename in it. Close the tab and every trace is gone from memory.
Frequently asked questions
What personal data does a PDF store about me?
Usually your name or account name as the author, the working title of the file, the software that created it, and the moments it was created and last saved. Files exported from design and scanning apps often add device models and editing history in the XMP block.
What is the difference between the Info dictionary and XMP?
The information dictionary is the old, simple list of fields stored in the file trailer. XMP is a newer XML packet that holds the same fields plus much more, and it can be attached to the whole document, to single pages and to individual images. Both are cleaned here.
Is anything left behind after the cleanup?
The visible content stays, and so does anything you typed into the document yourself: text, comments, form values, signatures and file names embedded in links. Metadata fields, XMP packets and the document identifier are gone. Rewriting the file also collapses older revisions.
Why are the dates set to 1970 instead of removed?
Because some readers and print workflows expect a creation date to exist and behave oddly when the key is missing. The first second of 1970 is a valid date that reveals nothing, so it is safer than deletion and just as uninformative to anyone inspecting the file.
Will my bookmarks be deleted too?
No, bookmarks are kept by default because they are part of the document, not metadata about it. If you want them gone as well, switch to the custom option and turn on the bookmark toggle before you run the cleanup.
Can the person receiving my PDF still see the metadata?
Not after cleaning. Anyone can open a PDF's document properties in a reader, or run a command line tool over it, and read every field in seconds. That is why the details are worth removing before you email, publish or hand over the file.
Can I clean a whole folder at once?
Yes. Drop up to fifty files together and the same settings are applied to each of them, one after another. The cleaned documents come back in a single ZIP archive named pulsarkit-clean.zip, keeping their original names with a suffix.
How do I check that the metadata is really gone?
Open the cleaned file in any reader and look at its document properties: the author, title, subject and keyword rows should be empty. The tool also reads its own result back before handing it to you and reports a problem if any field survived.
