How to Optimize PDF
- 1
Drop your PDF
Add one file or up to twenty. They are opened by your own browser, not sent to a server.
- 2
Choose the web profile
Keep the default web profile to rebuild object streams and drop unreferenced resources, or pick structure only to move the tables and leave every byte of content untouched.
- 3
Download the linearized file
Save the result and put it on your site. Several files come back as one ZIP archive.
What linearization changes
A normal PDF keeps its cross-reference table at the very end, so a reader has to fetch the last bytes of the file before it can draw anything. Linearizing rewrites the file so the catalog, the hint tables and every object needed by page one sit at the front, in reading order. A web server that supports byte-range requests can then hand over the first few kilobytes and the visitor sees page one immediately, while the remaining pages arrive in the background. Nothing inside the pages is touched: text, fonts, vector art and image data are copied across byte for byte, and the page count, bookmarks, links and form fields all survive.
Two profiles, one decision
The web profile also gathers loose objects into object streams and discards resources that no page references any more, which usually claws back a few percent of the size. Structure only performs the single linearize pass and is the safer choice for signed or certified documents, where regrouping objects can invalidate a signature. Either way qpdf rebuilds the whole file, so a shaky cross-reference table gets repaired on the way through.
The file never leaves your browser
qpdf is compiled to WebAssembly and runs inside this page. Your document is read into browser memory, rebuilt there and handed straight back to you as a download. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is queued on a server, and there is no copy for anyone to delete afterwards. Close the tab and the file is gone.
Frequently asked questions
What is fast web view in a PDF?
It is a PDF saved in linearized form. The data needed to draw the first page is moved to the front of the file, so a browser can display that page after downloading only a small part of the document instead of waiting for all of it.
Why did my file get bigger after optimizing?
Because linearization adds hint tables and a second cross-reference section that describe where everything lives. On small documents that overhead can outweigh the savings and add a few percent. It is the price of showing page one instantly, and the file stays valid.
Does this reduce the quality of images or text?
No. Nothing is re-rendered, re-sampled or re-encoded. Image streams and font programs are copied across unchanged, so the document looks identical at every zoom level and the text layer stays selectable and searchable.
Is linearization useful for printing?
Not really. Print drivers read the whole file before they start, so the reordering buys nothing at the printer. It matters when a document is served over a network and the reader can request byte ranges, which is why it is called fast web view.
How is this different from compressing a PDF?
Compression makes the file smaller, usually by re-encoding images at a lower quality. This tool reorders the file so it starts rendering sooner and leaves the content untouched. They solve different problems, and running compression first then optimizing works well.
Do all browsers support fast web view?
Every mainstream viewer understands linearized files, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Acrobat. The benefit also needs your web server to answer byte-range requests, which nearly all of them do by default. On a viewer that ignores it, the file opens normally.
What are object streams and why turn them on?
Object streams pack many small internal objects into one compressed block, which shrinks the file and reduces the number of pieces a reader has to parse. They are part of the PDF 1.5 specification and are switched off in the structure only profile.
