How to add a header and footer to a PDF

Type the header and footer cells
Six cells sit left, centre and right along the top and the bottom. Type plain text, tokens such as page and total, or a mix, and switch on a rule line if you want one.

Six independent cells and five tokens
Each of the six cells is filled on its own, so a report can carry a department name on the left, a classification in the centre and a date on the right without any of them colliding. Tokens are resolved page by page: page and total become the running numbers, date and its ISO variant become today, file name becomes the original name without its extension, and title reads the document title stored in the file, staying empty when the file has none. A cell too wide for its slot is trimmed with an ellipsis instead of running off the paper.
Margins, rule lines and rotated pages
The margin decides how far the row sits from the paper edge, and the optional rule draws a hairline under the header and above the footer, in the same colour as the text. Pages carrying a rotation flag are measured in the orientation you see on screen, so a landscape scan gets its footer along the bottom of the visible sheet rather than down one side.
Your file stays on your device
The PDF is read, decorated and rewritten inside your browser tab. There is no upload, no queue on a server, and no copy left behind for anyone to delete later. Close the tab and the document is gone from memory, which is what makes internal reports safe to run here.
Frequently asked questions
Which tokens can I use?
Five: page for the current number, total for the page count, date for today in your locale and its ISO variant for a sortable form, file name for the original name without its extension, and title for the document title.
How do I put only a page number in the footer?
Leave five cells empty and type the page token alone in the footer centre. That prints a bare number on every sheet. Adding a slash and the total token turns it into the familiar 3 / 40 form instead.
What if the header sits on top of my text?
Increase the margin so the row moves toward the paper edge, or reduce the font size. Most documents leave enough white space at 28 points, while dense reports with tight margins usually need 48 points to stay clear.
Does it work with Cyrillic and Chinese characters?
Yes. The built-in PDF fonts cover only Western European letters, so anything else switches the whole run to an embedded Noto subset. That also happens when the document title itself brings in characters your cells did not.
Can I skip the title page?
Yes. Type a range such as 2-99 in the pages field and the first sheet is left alone. Every other page in the range gets the cells, and the page token still counts from the real position in the document.
Can I remove a header later?
Not selectively, because the cells become ordinary page content once saved. Keep the original file if you may need a clean copy. Running the tool twice writes a second row on top of the first rather than replacing it.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in JavaScript inside your browser tab, and the file never leaves your device. There is no account, no queue and no server-side copy, so even a two gigabyte document is handled locally.
