How to Make N-up PDF
- 1
Add your PDF
Drop the file in or choose it from your device. It is opened locally, so nothing is uploaded and nothing waits in a queue.
- 2
Choose how many pages per sheet
Pick 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 16, then set the sheet size, the margin and the gap between pages. Turn on cell borders if you want cut lines.
- 3
Download the N-up PDF
Press the button and save the result. Print it as it is: the layout is already baked into the file.
How the pages are placed on the sheet
Each source page is embedded as a vector object and scaled to fit its cell, keeping its proportions and staying centred. The grid follows the count you pick: two pages sit side by side on a landscape sheet, four in a two-by-two block, nine in a three-by-three, sixteen in a four-by-four. The sheet turns landscape automatically whenever that gives a bigger cell, which is what makes 2-up and 8-up readable. Margins and gutters are set in millimetres and taken out of the sheet before the cells are measured, so a ten millimetre margin really is ten millimetres on paper. Pages carrying a rotation flag are turned upright rather than dropped in sideways.
Handouts, drafts and the paper you save
Four slides to a sheet turns a deck into a handout with room for notes. Two pages to a sheet halves the paper on a long report and still reads comfortably at arm's length. Because the pages are real vector objects rather than screenshots, the text stays selectable and searchable in the new file, and it prints at the full resolution of your printer. The last sheet is left partly empty when the pages do not divide evenly.
Where your file is processed
The layout is built by your own browser, on your own machine. The PDF is not uploaded, not copied to a server and not stored anywhere afterwards. No account, no email, no waiting in a queue. When you close the tab, both the original and the result are gone from memory.
Frequently asked questions
What does N-up mean?
N-up is the printing term for putting N source pages on one printed sheet. Two-up puts two pages side by side, four-up puts four in a block. It is how handouts, drafts and booklet proofs are usually printed.
Does the text lose quality?
No. Each page is embedded as a vector object, not a picture, so the text is scaled down mathematically and prints at your printer's full resolution. It also stays selectable and searchable inside the new file.
How do I set the margins and the gaps?
Set the margin in millimetres for the border around the whole sheet and the gutter for the gap between neighbouring pages. Both are taken out of the sheet before the cells are measured, so the numbers hold on paper.
How is this different from the multiple-pages option in my printer driver?
The driver applies the layout at print time and only on that computer. This tool writes the layout into the PDF, so the file looks the same everywhere, can be shared or printed later, and does not depend on any driver settings.
What happens to the last incomplete sheet?
Its leftover cells are left empty. Nothing is stretched to fill the gap and no blank pages are added to make the count come out even, so a ten page file at four-up gives three sheets.
Can I undo an N-up layout?
Not from the finished file: the original page boundaries are gone once the pages are drawn onto a sheet. Keep your original document, which is why this tool never writes over the file you uploaded.
How many pages can it handle?
Up to two thousand pages in one go. Beyond that the browser runs short of memory, so split the document first and lay out the parts separately, then merge the sheets back together if you need one file.
