How to Make the Meme
- 1
Add your image
JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF, up to 50 MB. There is no template library. You bring the picture, which is also why nothing here is watermarked.
- 2
Type the top and bottom captions
Either one can be left empty. Text is uppercased by default, wrapped to the width of the image and sized automatically to fit.
- 3
Download the JPG
The result is saved as meme.jpg at quality 90, at the same width you uploaded, ready to post anywhere.
Two layouts, and why you would pick each
Classic overlay puts white capitals straight on the picture with a black outline around every letter, top and bottom, the way the format has looked since it started. It keeps the whole frame visible, which matters when the joke is in the picture. White boxes instead grows the canvas: a white strip is added above and below, exactly as tall as the text needs plus a margin, and the caption sits on it in black. That is the better choice when the photo is busy or pale, when the caption is long, or when you want every word legible on a phone-sized preview. An empty caption never creates a strip, so a bottom-only meme stays flush at the top.
Automatic sizing that actually fits
By default the font size starts at a tenth of the image height and steps down four pixels at a time until the caption fits five lines at 92% of the image width. If the text still will not fit at the minimum size, you are told plainly and offered the white boxes layout rather than being handed an image with the punchline running off the edge. You can also pick a fixed size from 16 to 160 pixels if you want two memes in a set to match exactly.
About the font
The classic meme face is Impact, and we do not ship it: its licence does not permit web distribution, and quietly serving it anyway would put every user of this page in the wrong. The tool asks for Anton instead, an open SIL OFL face with the same tall, tight, heavy proportions, and falls back to the Noto Sans face this site hosts itself, so the text always renders as real letters. On a device that happens to have Impact or Anton installed, that face is used directly.
Your picture stays on your device
The image is decoded, captioned and encoded inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and no watermark is added to the result, because there is no server involved to charge you for removing one. Close the tab and it is gone.
Frequently asked questions
Are there ready-made meme templates?
No, and that is deliberate. Hosting other people's images means hosting other people's copyright problems, so you upload the picture you want to use. Any image on your device works.
Which font is used instead of Impact?
Anton, an open-licence face with near-identical proportions, with this site's own Noto Sans as the guaranteed fallback. Impact itself is licensed by Microsoft and cannot legally be redistributed by a website, so we do not.
Does the image get uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser using a canvas and WebAssembly codecs. There is no upload, no account and no server-side copy.
What if my caption does not fit?
The font size drops automatically until the text fits five lines. If even the smallest size is not enough, you get a clear message suggesting the white boxes layout, which grows the canvas instead of shrinking the words.
How is the white boxes layout different?
Classic overlay draws the captions on top of the picture. White boxes adds white strips above and below the picture and puts black text on them, so the photograph is never covered and long captions stay readable.
Does Cyrillic work?
Yes. The bundled font covers Latin, Cyrillic and Greek, so Russian and Ukrainian captions render as real letters, uppercased correctly. Uppercasing is locale-aware, which matters for Turkish.
Is there a watermark on the result?
No. The file you download is the file you made: no logo, no corner tag, no sign-up wall.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Type the captions, tap the button and the JPG lands in your downloads. Processing speed depends on your phone, since your phone does the work.
